Bank warns of scammers targeting customers

15 June 2009

The Commonwealth bank has officially warned its customers of the latest attempts by scammers to access their bank accounts, after a surge in fake emails, phone calls and SMS alerts requesting Commonwealth Bank customer's details. Scammers have begun contacting the bank customers directly, pretending to be an official from the Commonwealth Bank who needs to verify their bank account details. Information they may request has varied from bank account numbers, credit card information, bank account names, passwords and the amounts within the accounts themselves.

The Commonwealth Bank has warned customers of this rise in scamming attempts in an official statement, which outlines the approaches the scammers are taking including email ';phishing', telephone 'vishing' and SMS 'smishing'. This terminology refers to the act of scammers contacting a bank customer directly via email, phone or SMS in order to find out their bank details to access their accounts.
The Commonwealth Bank is encouraging its customers to contact them if they receive any emails, phone calls or SMS alerts that are requesting bank details with caution not to respond to protect their own privacy.

Furthermore, it should be noted that all Australian banks will not usually contact their bank customers and ask for personal information such as pin numbers and any such emails or contact should be ignored.
