THE BANK JOB(MA15+, 112mins) ParamountWhen the British Government is blackmailed over photographs of Princess Margaret in less that regal circumstances, the Secret Intelligence Service employs a crew of thieves to rob the safety deposit box that contains them. The details of this celebrated 1971 robbery at Lloyds Bank have always been hazy thanks to a government D-Notice. But there was always a distinct whiff of plausibility in any scandal that revolved around the royal party girl, so we can only guess at what director Roger Donaldson was thinking of when he flagged this central conspiracy at the start of the film. What might have been a juicy twist with all the tawdry details drip-fed as they come to light, becomes a mere plot point that gets wasted at the outset and leaves nothing to the imagination.
